Great Northern Highway

Muchea to Wubin Upgrade Stage 2

Project Background

In 2014, the Australian and Western Australian governments announced that detailed planning was underway for a $385 million upgrade of the 218 km section of Great Northern Highway between Muchea and Wubin. The highway forms part of the National Highway Network and provides a strategic freight link between Perth and the State’s north as well as Darwin and the Northern Territory.

Completed Works

We have already completed a 21 km section of new highway from Batty Bog to Walebing at a cost of approximately $65 million. We are also nearing completion of the New Norcia Bypass and have started work on 19 km of new highway at Miling Straight.

Project Planning Review

In conjunction with industry partners Jacobs and Arup, we have also completed a comprehensive planning review of Great Northern Highway and prioritised a series of additional construction packages to be delivered by 2019. To be managed by this Integrated Project Team, these works will significantly improve safety and amenity.

Improvements to be made include town bypasses, wider roads, more passing lanes, flattening crests and easing curves, safer roadsides, more rest stops and additional facilities for heavy vehicles.

This project is jointly funded by the Australian and Western Australian Governments. It will ensure that the highway is able to meet the requirements of all road users and be assessed for use by 53.5 m road trains in the future.
