In 2014, the Australian and Western Australian governments announced that detailed planning was underway for a $385 million upgrade of the 218 km section of Great Northern Highway between Muchea and Wubin. The highway forms part of the National Highway Network and provides a strategic freight link between Perth and the State’s north as well as Darwin and the Northern Territory.
We have already replaced 11 km of highway through the Bindi Bindi bends at a cost of $35 million, completed a 21 km section of new highway from Batty Bog to Walebing at a cost of approximately $65 million and started work on the $29.8 million New Norcia Bypass.
In conjunction with industry partners Jacobs and Arup, we have also completed a comprehensive planning review of Great Northern Highway and prioritised a series of additional construction packages to be delivered by 2019. To be managed by this Integrated Project Team, these works will significantly improve safety and amenity.
Among the improvements to be made include town bypasses, wider roads, more passing lanes, flattening crests and easing curves, safer roadsides, more rest stops and additional facilities for heavy vehicles.
This project is jointly funded by the Australian and Western Australian Governments. It will ensure that the highway is able to meet the requirements of all road users and be assessed for future use by 53.5 m road trains in the future.
