Reid Highway / Malaga Drive Interchange

Road users are enjoying free flowing traffic conditions using the two new bridges on Reid Highway over Malaga Drive. The upgrade replaces the signalised intersection where road users regularly waited for several signal changes at peak periods.

The interchange works were largely completed in March 2016 and are designed to improve safety and efficiency.

We thanks motorists, residents and businesses for their patience and understanding during construction.

Project improvements included:

  • Approximately 1.3 kilometres of four lane dual carriageway and 1.3 kilometres of single / two lanes off and on-ramps.
  • Two new separate two lane bridges along Reid Highway over Malaga Drive with sealed shoulders to provide vehicle breakdown storage and safe on-road cycling across the bridges.
  • A Principal Shared Path (PSP) that ties in to existing paths.
  • Realigning pedestrian and cyclist facilities on the east side of Malaga Drive.
  • New pavement and road markings in the Malaga Drive project area.
  • New traffic signals at the off and on-ramp connection to Malaga Drive.
  • A widened Malaga Drive to provide bus lanes in each direction through both sets of traffic signals.
  • Modifications to Reid Highway on-ramps to provide future ramp metering.
  • Installing foundation intelligent transport systems consisting of optic fibre communication network, vehicle detection systems and closed circuit television.
  • Street lighting, safety and noise barriers and screen walls.
  • Landscaping, vegetation and public art.



All landscaping works are now complete. We sincerely thank the Friends of Lightning Swamp Bushland for their excellent input into this project. The species list at the Malaga site was finalised with input from the group. Plant species chosen for the verges and roadside adjacent to Lightning Swamp are natural Lightning Swamp vegetation types.

Drainage basins and swales have been planted with species local to the Lightning Swamp region. As part of the early project works, existing vegetation was mulched, and topsoil from the project sites was removed and stored. This topsoil and mulch mix was spread at the Malaga site to stabilise the soil and prepare it for winter planting.

Some of the canopy species selected were the corymbia calophylla at Malaga South near Lightning Swamp, and the eucalyptus sideroxylon north of the intersection of Malaga Drive. These can grow up to 12 m high, and will provide shade, screening and aesthetics within the Malaga Drive streetscape.

Smaller non-irrigated plantings will be used to revegetate the road verges, including the

  • native cultivars eremophila glabra ‘prostrate’;
  • grevillea crithmifolia ‘prostrate’;
  • ficinia nodosa;
  • hemiandra pungens; and
  • olearia axilaris ‘little smokie’.

It is expected that a number of plants will fail to thrive each year, so this germination/mortality rate will be monitored to determine where infill planting may be required in subsequent winters.


Project background

Malaga Drive is one of the major arterial links between the Morley precinct and the growing areas of Malaga, Ballajura and other north-eastern suburbs.

Since 1990, the Metropolitan Region Scheme has included a grade-separated diamond interchange at this location, with a six-lane freeway standard route on Reid Highway over a four-lane route on Malaga Drive. The original intersection was constructed in 1992 and since that time, traffic volumes and congestion have increased with the growth in residential and commercial development.

Nearly 75,000 vehicles pass through the intersection on a weekday, which results in vehicles waiting for several traffic signal changes at peak periods.

The interchange works are expected to improve safety and efficiency at the intersection with the two new bridges providing four lanes for Reid Highway traffic to flow uninterrupted over Malaga Drive.

We designed a four-lane freeway standard route on the Reid Highway over a four-lane arterial standard route on Malaga Drive. Dedicated bus lanes were included as requested by the Public Transport Authority, and a Principal Shared Path (PSP) links the existing PSP. All work was done in the existing road reserve.

To provide enough long-term capacity on Reid Highway, and to save costs on future expansions, the bridges were built to eventually cater for three lanes in each direction. A double right-turn facility is included to cater for heavy westbound-northbound traffic movement.

  • Reduced vehicle emissions


Community Engagement

The Reid Highway / Malaga Drive Construction Reference Group (CRG) consisted of residents, local ratepayers, environmental groups, businesses, and other interested parties.
