Latest news

Upgrades along Albany Highway in the Great Southern Region are complete.

Following the completion of several packages of works along this stretch of highway, north of Kojonup, traffic flow has improved and led to safer journeys for commuters, local residents and the freight industry.

The project will deliver a much-needed safety boost to continue improving the highway in the Great Southern Region.

Overview

Albany Highway has progressively been upgraded in the Great Southern Region to improve the level of driver safety in the area.

On average, a total of 3,100 vehicles use Albany Highway in this area daily. Of this, nine per cent are heavy vehicles.

In 2013, $23 million was allocated over four years to build nine new passing lanes on Albany Highway. This was co-funded by the Road Trauma Trust Account and State Government.

In a separate project, additional widening works on the highway were also planned in conjunction with the passing lanes, through the Safer Roads Program. This project amounted to $2.4 million.

Albany Highway is an important transport route connecting Perth with the Wheatbelt and Great Southern Regions. Both sets of works will improve road links between Perth-Albany.

Scope

Works on Albany Highway at Harold Road involved constructing two additional passing lanes on Albany Highway near Harold Road, one northbound and one southbound.

The project was completed in June 2017, representing the final two of nine passing lanes that were committed back in 2013. This was co-funded by the Road Trauma Trust Account and State Government.

The following nine passing lanes, completed in five stages over four years, have now been completed:

  • Southbound passing lane on Albany Highway at Cranbrook (completed in December 2013);
  • Northbound passing lane at Settlement Road and southbound passing lane at Narrikup (completed in March 2015);
  • Northbound and southbound passing lanes at Tunney (completed in February 2016);
  • Two northbound passing lanes on Albany Highway at Martagallup Road and Woogenellup Road (completed in December 2016); and
  • Northbound and southbound passing lanes on Albany Highway at Harold Road (completed in June 2017).
  • An additional southbound overtaking lane was also constructed on Albany Highway at Down Road to further improve road efficiencies in this region.

Works on Albany Highway between Watts Road and Fairdale Road involved:

  • Widening Albany Highway from seven to nine metres between Watts Road and Fairdale Road; and
  • Replacing a small bridge.

The project was completed in April 2017 and classified under the Safer Roads Program.
