Albany Highway Upgrade

John Street to Leach Highway

Project Background

Albany Highway is a critical feeder road from the eastern suburbs into the city. A concept design was completed in 2005/06 following extensive consultation with residents, businesses in the area and the City of Canning. The feedback from the community was instrumental in determining the final concept for the improvements.

In January 2011, Downer EDI Works Pty Ltd was awarded the $3.65 million contract to carry out the improvement works along Albany Highway, between Leach Highway and John Street in Bentley.

Albany Highway is a primary traffic distributor providing a key link for Perth's south eastern region and commercial shopping precincts in Bentley, Cannington, Maddington, Gosnells and Kelmscott, which is why it is important to continue to upgrade the highway.

These works were funded under the State Government’s Safer Road and Bridges Program.

What did the project involve?

The project was developed to address traffic and safety concerns by providing various improvement treatments along this section of Albany Highway to reduce the number and severity of road crashes, and improve pedestrian access.

Works included:

  • widening Albany Highway from the intersection of John Street and Ashburton Street to Alexandra Place;
  • construction of a new median along Albany Highway (between John Street and Mitchell Street) for better movement of traffic
  • modifying the existing traffic signals at the intersection of Albany Highway, John Street and Ashburton Street;
  • new traffic signals at the intersection of Albany Highway, Bedford Street and Ewing Street, with right turn lanes on each Albany Highway approach;
  • sealing works along the northbound carriageway;
  • upgrading the shared paths;
  • making provision for bus bays to meet current design standards; and
  • upgrading all intersections along this section of Albany Highway.

How did the project benefit the community?

The project provided a range of benefits, including:

  • enhanced safety and transport efficiency for all road users in the area;
  • traffic signals that allow safer access to and from the Highway at Bedford and Ewing Streets;
  • improved access to and from the Highway at John and Ashburton Streets; and
  • improved pedestrian safety and access when crossing Albany Highway via the new traffic signals.
