Great Northern Highway - Kimberley

Great Northern Highway is the main land transport link between Perth and the Kimberley Region and is the only sealed road connecting Perth with the Northern Territory.

A design and construction contract was awarded to Team Savannah - a consortium of BGC Contracting, Laing O’Rourke Australia Construction and AECOM - to undertake the project. Construction commenced in July 2008 and completed in December 2009.

As part of the Auslink National Network, the highway upgrades included in this project were fully funded by the Australian Government.

Five sections of the highway have been upgraded:

  • 5 km of the Elvire to Sandy Creek Section (20 km north of Halls Creek);
  • Fletchers Creek Bridge (120 km north of Halls Creek);
  • Big Mabel Creek Bridge (20 km south of Warmun);
  • Telegraph Creek Bridge (20 km north of Warmun);
  • Bow River Section (20 km north of Warmun).

The works have improved pavement strength, road alignment, road safety and overall flood serviceability of these sections of the highway.
