Invitation for public comment

We are proposing works to improve the safety of Albany Highway within the Shire of Kojonup, just south of Kojonup townsite.

Widening of this section is necessary to improve safety and comply with the Austroads safety guidelines. The shoulder width will be increased to 2 metres which, according to the Road Safety Management Guideline, can help reduce the number of killed and seriously injured crashes by 64 per cent.

To undertake these works roadside vegetation on either side of the alignment will be cleared. In designing the works, we have applied the mitigation hierarchy to limit the impact of clearing as much as possible. In total 5.5 hectares of vegetation is required to be cleared, the majority of which is considered to be in a degraded condition.

Public Comment

The proposed works have been determined to be a controlled action, due to potential impacts to threatened species and communities listed under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

Under section 95A(3) of the EPBC Act, we are seeking public comment on the Preliminary Documentation. The documentation describes the proposed works, examines the likely environmental impacts and the proposed environmental management procedures.

You are invited to comment in writing on the preliminary documentation by 5pm Friday 17 August 2018.
