Learning and Development


Main Roads WA is committed to supporting the ongoing development of our employees. We endeavour to provide our employees with the development they need to achieve their personal and professional career aspirations, through a variety of structured training and development programs, tailored to individual employee needs at all stages of their career.

Every year, Main Roads develops a Business Training Calendar, a Technical Training Calendar and a Regional Training Calendar. The courses offered are directly based on data collected from our employees' Individual Development Plans and business training needs analysis.

Previous Business Training Calenders have offered courses in areas such as leadership, contract management, personal effectiveness and e-learning whilst previous Technical Training Calenders have offered sessions on construction and maintenance patterns, materials engineering, road safety and planning and design.


Study Leave

Study leave is available to Main Roads employees who are participating in a Main Roads leadership or technical development program or undertaking studies relevant to their work at Main Roads. Employees can receive support for studying:

  • A certificate or diploma course
  • An undergraduate degree
  • Post-Graduate study                                          



We offer a range of scholarship opportunities designed to encourage continued growth through further study that contributes to the future capability of the organisation.

The scholarship program is open to all permanent employees of Main Roads and covers up to 75% of tuition fees of approved areas of study. Scholarship students are also entitled to up to six hours of study leave per week as well as flexible working arrangements.


Development Programs

Development programs have been established for employees and managers from all levels of the organisation to assist in furthering their education or to develop new skills. Our technical and leadership development programs are based on our four key corporate foundations of Innovation, Strategic Management, Leadership and Values. This ensures that all programs, regardless of their level, have consistent direction. Some of the programs we have on offer include:

  • Executive Leadership Development Program
  • Middle Managers Program and the
  • Development Employee Leadership Program
