Utilising systems, devices and data to ensure sophisticated and real-time controls, and insights

ITS facilitates the gathering of data on road operations and traffic safety by using available data such as traffic flow, speed, lane use, incident detect etc... to develop a more detailed understanding of the road network.

Main Roads harnesses data gathered from ITS devices to inform advanced algorithms that work to make informed decisions that improve traffic flow, safety and overall journey experience. Not only does leveraging the power of data and algorithms assist with real-time network performance, but allows for us to better plan for long-term solutions to improve the efficiency and safety of our roads. Some of the key components that inform these systems include:

  • Incident Detection: Advanced algorithms and specialised detectors identify incidents in real-time, alerting operators in the Road Network Operations Centre, and enabling a swift response.
  • Environmental Monitoring: Sensors monitor weather conditions, and other environmental factors, aiding in predicting potential challenges and improving road safety.
  • Strategic Traffic Trends: ITS uses a variety of technologies that identify overarching traffic volume patterns, facilitating the development of strategies to optimise traffic flow, and inform future infrastructure improvements.
  • Situational Awareness: Enhancing real time traffic operations and efficiency through the utilisation of data, providing a complete picture of the interconnected systems and situations occuring on our roads.
