Providing information to road users on network conditions

The overall function of ITS is to improve the operation of the entire transport system (often in real-time) for transport network controllers, travellers, freight and other users.

The integration of ITS information systems empowers road users with timely, actionable information. With more information, road users can make well-informed decisions, adapting their routes and driving behaviours to contribute to smoother traffic flow and enhanced safety. Some of the systems that provide information to our customers include:

  • Variable Message Signs (VMS): These signs display real-time information on travel time, traffic conditions, detours, incidents, and weather. VMS provide near real-time information that empowers our customers to make informed decisions and increase the safety of our road network.
  • Applications for Road Users: Purpose-built applications that provide real-time traffic updates, alternative route options, and incident alerts to drivers' smartphones and in vehicle applications via infrastructure to Vehicle Communications and Cooperative ITS (C-ITS), enhancing their ability to make informed travel decisions and increasing the safety of our road network.
  • Social Media Channels: Official Main Roads social media platforms provide crucial traffic-related information, enabling rapid communication and community engagement during incidents or disruptions.
  • Radio: Radio broadcasts continue to serve as a reliable source for broadcasting real-time traffic information, offering real-time updates to a broad audience.
