Following an extensive consultation process, the Code of Conduct for Pilot Vehicles and Pilots (30 page PDF 258 KB) (May 2010) has now been released.
The Code builds on existing legislation and specifies the requirements for vehicles being used as pilot vehicles. It also outlines the roles and responsibilities of any person working as a pilot for oversize and/or over-mass vehicles on our roads.
Compliance with the intent of the requirements contained in the Code will improve the management and safe movement of overmass and oversize vehicles in WA.
An accredited pilot is an Authorised Person who has successfully completed a training course in the pilotage of oversize vehicles, and whose training has been endorsed by the Commissioner of Police.
Four-day Accredited Pilots/Authorised Persons training courses are conducted monthly. Courses include theory and practical traffic management module.
Interstate pilots requiring Authorised Persons status must complete the Traffic Theory and Practical Management module with one of the two training providers.
Training is coordinated by the following authorised trainers in Western Australia:
On completion of the training, the training provider will forward details of the successful pilot(s) to the Commissioner of Police for authorisation. The Commissioner of Police then forwards this information to Main Roads to arrange gazettal and maintenance of the Pilots' Register.
Accredited pilots must complete a Pilot Details form (1 page PDF 45 KB) and submit it to the WA Police Traffic Escort Section (www.police.wa.gov.au/TRAFFIC/PoliceEscorts/tabid/1005/Default.aspx)..

Police escorted oversize loads are coordinated and conducted by the WA Police Traffic Escort Section (www.police.wa.gov.au/TRAFFIC/PoliceEscorts/tabid/1005/Default.aspx).
The Section ensures the safe travel of all oversize load movements that are in excess of 5.5 metres wide and over 30 metres (metropolitan region), over 40 metres (country) in length, throughout Western Australia.
