National Transport Commission

The NTC leads transport regulatory reform nationally to meet the needs of transport users and the broader community for safe, efficient and sustainable land transport.

It contributes to a vision of the best national transport outcomes for Australia. This is achieved through consulting and working with industry and all levels of government to establish priority areas for transport regulatory reform.

Performance Based Standards (PBS) offers potential for heavy vehicle operators to achieve higher productivity and safety through innovative vehicle design.  PBS focuses on how well a vehicle behaves on the road, through a set of safety and infrastructure protection standards, rather than assessing a vehicle based on prescriptive limits.

If a heavy vehicle operator wishes to introduce an innovative vehicle that is outside the scope of any existing Main Roads permit products, the operator is encouraged to seek approval via the PBS Scheme (www.ntc.gov.au/viewpage.aspx?AreaId=37&DocumentId=1158).

Once approval has been obtained via the PBS Scheme, Main Roads will issue a permit to allow the innovative vehicle to operate within Western Australia.

WA operators should visit the National Transport Commission's website (www.ntc.gov.au) for more information.
