VARIATION TO WARNING LIGHT REQUIREMENTS
ALLOWING FOR THE USE OF LEDs
Industry is alerted to a recent notice published in the Government Gazette dated 24 April 2009, providing for the use of LEDs on oversize vehicles and pilot vehicles.
The notice reads as follows:
Pursuant to Regulation 41 of the Road Traffic (Vehicle Standards) Regulations 2002 (“the Regulations”) the Director General of the Department for Planning and Infrastructure has granted an exemption against the requirements of Schedule 2, Division 6, Clause 39(c) of the Regulations in respect of oversize vehicles or pilot vehicles where warning lights are required to be displayed.
Fitment of LEDs is however subject to the conditions set out below.
Condition
1. Where LED lights are used as the primary source of illumination in the warning lights, then the warning lights may have a power of less than 55 watts but must have a combined power of not less than 24 watts.
Definition
For the purpose of this Notice —
“LED” means light-emitting diode, a semiconductor diode which glows when a voltage is applied.
