New Single Trip Permit Condition - Additional Pilot now required on Specified Routes
Problems have been experienced that call into question the suitability and safety of some sections of the road network for the movement of large oversize loads.
In response to this, Main Roads WA in consultation with WA Police Service, has determined that an additional 3rd Pilot will now be required to accompany permitted loads in excess of 5.5 m in width on specified routes. Until now such moves have required only 2 Accredited Pilots and a Police Traffic Warden to escort them.
The routes affected are as follows:
- Great Northern Highway between the Perth Metro Area and Dalwallinu
- Brand Highway between the Perth Metro Area and Dongara
- Albany Highway between the Perth Metro Area and Boddington (including Marradong Road)
- Raymond Road between Australind Bypass and South Western Highway
- Coalfields Road between South Western Highway and Collie
- Coalfields Road between Collie and Albany Highway
The additional Pilot will not normally be required to continue with the movement of the load past those points specified. Therefore, it is essential that operators check permit conditions prior to departure.
Positioning and duties of the additional Pilot will be at the direction of the escorting Traffic Warden and all Pilot and transporting vehicles are to maintain continuous radio contact for that purpose.
Operators are being given 4 weeks to position themselves for this change, with the new Condition not formally coming into effect until Saturday 12 April 2008. Where possible however, operators are encouraged to adopt the change earlier.
All other Standard Conditions applicable to the movement of oversize loads remain unchanged.
