Road Safety Strategy "The Road Towards Zero"

"A safe road system for our children, grandchildren and the community"

We have launched our Road Towards Zero Safety Strategy (8 page PDF 542 KB) with a vision to eliminate road crashes as a major cause of death and serious injury in Western Australia.

This follows on from our Road Safety Policy statement (1 page PDF 240 KB):

"We believe no one should die or be seriously injured on the State’s road network, and will manage the network to minimise road trauma"

As part of our Strategic Plan, 2K12, we aim to be recognised for excellence in customer service and world class road access.  Our Strategy supports the Western Australian Government's Towards Zero Safety Strategy 2008 - 2020.  Further information can be viewed on the Office of Road Safety website (http://www.ors.wa.gov.au/Towards-Zero.aspx).

Vision Zero Logical Framework

The Australian Transport Council of Ministers has adopted the Safe Systems framework as the way to make road safety improvements. The framework is based around two fundamental objectives:

  • making the road transport system more forgiving of human error; and
  • minimising the level of unsafe road user behaviour.

The Safe Systems framework has a similar ethical objective to that of the 'Vision Zero' approach adopted in Sweden and 'Sustainable Safety' in the Netherlands. While each approach is a little different to suit each country the basic approach is the same, and that is, motorists will make mistakes which should not lead to death or serious injury.
