Perth's iconic Horseshoe Bridge on William Street (between Wellington and Roe Streets) is set for a major upgrade.
This important project involves reconstructing the concrete deck of the bridge to waterproof the facilities under the bridge, improve the road surface and to enable the City of perth to implement two way traffic flows over the bridge following completion of the works.
Some demolition works to remove the existing concrete deck will be undertaken in stages throughout the project. These noisy activities will generally be carried out during the night to minimise the impact on occupants of offices below the bridge - namely the Public Transport Authority staff below the bridge deck.
Commuters and road users are being advised to use alternative routes as the bridge will be closed to all pedestrians and traffic from 30 November 2009 to April 2010, with the intention to have a southbound lane restored during March 2010 prior to full completion of the project.
Transperth buses will be permitted to use the bridge during peak times only but cannot set down passengers on the bridge. Please visit www.transperth.wa.gov.au for detailed information on how bus services will be affected by this upgrade.

In addition to the closure of the bridge, some minor intersection works are proposed at the following intersections:
- William Street/Roe Street - Signal and line marking modifications to temporarily divert through traffic east or west up Roe Street.
- Roe Street/Barrack Street/Wellington Street (commencing 22 November) - Signal, median island and line marking modifications to convert the Barrack Street bridge to two lanes northbound and two lanes southbound and a temporary right turn movement onto Wellington Street. This will help cater for additional diverted traffic entering the city.
Please view the alternative route diagram (2 page PDF 93 KB) for further details of these changes and some suggested alternative routes.
Please note: The Sutherland Street underpass has a maximum clearance of 3.7 m. All vehicles over this height should consider other alternative routes.
The project involves:
- removing existing brick paving and old concrete overlay (deck);
- applying corrosion inhibitor to steel components;
- constructing a new reinforced concrete overlay;
- installing a waterproof membrane;
- constructing new asphalt traffic lanes in lieu of brick paving;
- reinstatement of footpaths;
- concrete kerbing, drainage connections and guardrail replacement.
We've met with the Public Transport Authority and the City of perth who have agreed on how the works will be carried out to minimise the construction period, traffic congestion and disruption to the general public.
Meetings have been held with other nearby affected stakeholders to advise them of the impacts, including noise and access issues.

The bridge upgrade will:
- improve access and safety for pedestrians and motorists using the bridge; and
- extend the life of the bridge and minimise ongoing maintenance requirements.
We've worked with the City of Perth in developing the project to form part of the City's greater plan to improve traffic flow into and out of the City. Works have been scheduled to be completed in time for City of Perth's planned improvements along Wellington Street.
Bridge works will be carried out between December 2009 and April 2010, with the intention to have a southbound lane restored during March 2010 prior to full completion of the project.
During peak times, motorists may experience delays. We encourage motorists to seek alternative routes and ask for your cooperation and patience.
- We will provide regular project updates via daily traffic reports and other media. If you require further information, please contact:
