Current status

Work is progressing on schedule on the major upgrade of a 4.3 km section of Great Northern Highway between Lennard Street and Haddrill Rd in Millendon and Herne Hill.

The $17.3m federally funded contract is being carried out by experienced road builder, Highway Construction, under our management.

The works, extending through to July next year, involve the widening and reconstruction of the Highway to improve traffic flow and safety. They comprise the final stage of a $75m, five year commitment by the Federal Government to improve the Highway.

Key features

The project includes:

  • widening of the Highway base from approximately nine metres to 14.5 m;
  • a 3.5 m median strip in the centre;
  • two metre wide cycle lanes on each side of the Highway;
  • an overtaking lane in each direction;
  • the addition of turning pockets at all intersections, being: Maisie Street, Beryl Avenue, Padbury Avenue, River Road, Hyem Road, McDonald Street, Argyle Street and Barrett Street;
  • kerbing throughout the 4.3 km section;
  • a fully enclosed storm water drainage system;
  • eleven off-road bus bays;
  • upgrading of all driveways to property boundaries, including asphalting;
  • improvement of street lighting; and
  • landscaping along both sides of the Highway after major works are completed.

The roadworks will be tied off about 200 m north of Lennard Street.

Major Benefits

The addition of the wide median and turning pockets will greatly improve safety for motorists turning across or off the Highway by providing protection against through-traffic.

The off-road bus bays will improve safety for bus users and minimise disruption to Highway traffic.

The addition of overtaking lanes, approximately one kilometre in length between Maisie Street and Padbury Avenue, will ease driver frustration and improve safety.

The addition of cycling lanes will improve safety for cyclists and encourage this form of transport.

Traffic flow

The Highway upgrade is a major project on an extremely busy Highway, causing unavoidable delays to traffic.

However, a Traffic Management Plan will be in place, under which the contractor will be required to maintain two way traffic flow at all times. On occasions, traffic controllers will be able to allow a two-way flow only on an alternating basis.

We appreciate these delays can be frustrating but we ask motorists to please be patient, observe all temporary signage and obey instructions from traffic controllers.

Motorists who can avoid the works by using West Swan Road are strongly urged to do so.

Earlier works

All major works have been completed on a section of Great Northern Highway between Haddrill Road and the Shell Service Station just north of the Swan River, except for a dual use path on the east side of the Highway.

The addition of traffic lights at the intersection of the Highway with West Swan Road has greatly improved safety and traffic flow.

Work has also been completed near the Upper Swan Primary School, including construction of a new access road and installation of a solar-powered LED variable speed sign system.

The highly visible signs warn motorists to slow down to 60 km/h during school drop off and pick up periods.

We appreciate the patience the shown by the school community during the works.
