New traffic signals will be installed at the intersection of Ardross Street on Canning Highway in Ardross in late 2009 providing a major safety boost for pedestrians and local school children.

The project involves installation of traffic signals, extending the right turn pockets on Canning Highway at its intersection with Ardross Street and upgrading the pedestrian crossing on all four legs of the intersection to current access and mobility standards for all pedestrians.

The project had been jointly developed by Minister for Transport Simon O'Brien, the Member for Alfred Cove, Dr Janet Woollard, the City of Melville and Main Roads to address requests for improved facilities for pedestrians at this intersection. The signalised intersection will improve safety especially for school children as the guard controlled crossing on the highway is no longer operational

Project Scope

The project includes:

  • installation of traffic signals;
  • extensions to the right turn pockets on Canning Highway at its intersection with Ardross Street;
  • upgrading the pedestrian crossing on all four legs of the intersection to current access and mobility standards for all pedestrians; and
  • relocation of one bus stop and modification of another.

Once the signals are installed, they will be synchronised with other signals on Canning Highway via our Traffic Operations Centre to ensure the impact on travel times for motorists is minimised.

The signals will greatly improve pedestrian access from Ardross Street across Canning Highway for local residents. Residents on Ardross Street are advised that local traffic volumes in Ardross Street will be monitored over a 12 month period.

This safety initiative provides an excellent opportunity for parents and children from the north side of Ardross Street to walk or cycle to school using the signals, which will assist in reducing traffic volumes near the school during the morning peak time.

Community Benefits

The project is expected to provide a range of benefits in the area, including:

  • Increased safety for school children, pedestrians and cyclists accessing either sides of the highway.
  • Increased capacity for school children to walk or cycle to school safely and reduce local car usage.
  • Safer access to cross Canning Highway from Ardross Street and access the northern shopping precinct.
  • Minimising the number and severity of crashes.

Project Timing

The project will be implemented over two stages:

Stage One

Installation of signals with minor intersection modifications

Start - November/early December 2009
Finish - December 2009/January 2010

Stage Two

Some civil works, such as the turning pockets, will be completed in June 2010 (following service relocation works).
