Schedule of Works
Funding has been allocated by the Federal Government for pre construction activities associated with Stage One of the project. These activities are planned for completion by December 2009, and include:
- planning;
- concept design;
- land dealings; and
- other preconstruction activities.
Funding to progress critical preconstruction activities associated with Stage Two of the project has also been confirmed recently. These preconstruction activities for Stage Two are planned for completion by December 2010. No further funding for construction works of either stage has been provided for this project to date.
What will the Project involve?
Stage One of the project will provide a single carriageway heavy vehicle route from the Victoria Highway (west of the Kununurra townsite) to Weaber Plain Road (north of the Kununurra townsite). This project includes approximately 10 km of new road alignment and a 480 m bridge over the Ord River.
Stage Two of the project involves approximately 10 km of new road alignment from Weaber Plain Road (north of the Kununurra townsite) to the existing Victoria Highway (east of the Kununurra townsite).
How will it benefit the community?
Stage one of the project will remove all heavy haulage permit vehicles from the existing crossing of the Ord River on the Kununurra Diversion Dam. Access to the ports of Wyndham and Darwin (via the National Highway) will be improved as a result. When both stages of the project are complete, the heavy vehicle route will significant improve safety for the motorists and pedestrians by reducing the number of heavy vehicles travelling through the Kununurra Townsite, reduce noise impacts for local residents and businesses and increase efficiency of road freight in the region.
