Current Status

A design and construction contract has been awarded to Team Savannah - a consortium of BGC Contracting, Laing O’Rourke Australia Construction and Maunsell Australia - and preliminary work is underway on this project.

This includes camp construction and recruitment wherever possible within the local community. Project leaders are negotiating with the Warmun Indigenous community with a view to providing its members with employment and training opportunities.

Construction work is expected to start in early July 2008 and to be completed by late 2009.

About the Project

Great Northern Highway is the main land transport link between Perth and the Kimberley and the only sealed road connecting Perth with the Northern Territory.

As part of the Auslink National Network, the highway upgrades to be done within this project - all in the KimberLey region - are funded by the Federal Government.

Five sections of the highway will upgraded:

    • Elvire to Sandy Creek (20 km north of Halls Creek);
    • Fletchers Creek Bridge (120km north of Halls Creek);
    • Big Mabel Creek Bridge (20km south of Warmun);
    • Telegraph Creek Bridge (20km north of Warmun);
    • Bow River (20km north of Warmun).

The work will improve pavement strength, road alignment, road safety and overall flood serviceability of these sections of the highway.
