Construction has been progressing on schedule this summer with as many as 8 distinct sections being worked on. Access Alliance comprising Main Roads WA, Brierty Contractors and consultants Maunsell /AECOM is undertaking the design and construction. It is anticipated that by winter nearly 53 km of the commenced 57 km will have been completed. This will leave a small 3.5 km section 5 km south of Bindoon and a short section north of New Norcia to complete along with the upgrade of the Great Northern Highway and Brand Highway intersection. It is expected these works will largely be finished by Christmas 2009. On completion of this project there will have been the construction of eight additional passing lanes between Muchea and Walebing and the upgrading of just over 64 km of highway.
Works are currently being undertaken by Access Alliance on the following sections:
South of Bindoon
- Reconstruction, realignment and intersection improvements on a 3.5 km section located 5 km south of Bindoon (Hart Drive to Tee Tree Road)
Bindoon to New Norcia
- Realignment and reconstruction of a 4 km section at Longbridge Gully including the construction of 2 passing lanes (northbound and soutbound)
- Realignment and reconstruction of a 2 km section near Hay Flat Road including the construction of a northbound passing lane
- Realignment and reconstruction of a 3 km section at Seven Mile Well including the construction of a southbound passing lane (recently completed in March)
- Widening and pavement rehabilitation of a 22 km section from Little Bindoon Hill to New Norcia.
New Norcia to Bindi Bindi
- Reconstruction and vertical alignment improvements on a 9 km section located 5 km north of New Norcia (recently completed in March)
- Realignment and reconstruction on a 15.3 km section from Walebing to Bindi Bindi (recently completed in March).
Access Alliance has posted a construction calendar on their website. It will be updated to provide the community with a schedule of construction works. By visiting www.accessalliance.com.au and clicking ‘Construction Calendar’ road users will be able to decide when to travel or if an alternative route is an option.
Temporary traffic speed limits will be in place during construction and road users are asked to observe signage and exercise caution.

The Federal Government committed $98.1m towards the upgrade of Great Northern Highway with announcements of $14m in 2003, $51.1m in 2004 and $33m in 2006.
From the Federal Government announcements up until late 2007 some sections were delivered through the Main Roads Term Network Contractor. In late 2007 an alliance style contract was formed called Access Alliance. This Alliance comprising Main Roads WA, Brierty Contractors and consultants Maunsell /AECOM, will deliver the remainder of the work and will be responsible for the design and construction of various sections between Muchea and Bindi Bindi.
