Stage 2 of the Project involves construction of a single east-west carriageway from North West Coastal Highway to the Geraldton Mt Magnet Road, a distance of about 8.7 km. The new road will provide improved access to Geraldton Port and Geraldton Airport.
The $52m project includes provision for upgrading the new road to a dual carriageway and for other local roads to be connected in the future, should this be necessary.
Abigroup Contractors Pty Ltd were awarded the 18 month Design and Construct Contract on 21 August 2008. Construction in Geraldton commenced in December 2008 with the construction of the shared path along Currell Way and fencing of the Corridor with major earthworks commencing on the Highway in January 2009.
The road formation has now taken shape throughout the corridor. Constuction of the links to the existing local roads has commenced at North West Coastal Highway, Goulds Road, Edward Road and Deepdate Road. There will be some traffic control requirements over the next few months to facilitate the construction which will include:
- temporary lane closures on North West Coastal Highway;
- closure of Goulds Road to construct the intersection; and
- closure of Edward Road to construct the roundabout.
Construction of the noise wall adjacent to Scott Road is complete and landscaping/revegetation works have commenced, taking the opportunity of the good rainfall so far this winter.
The road should be fully completed and open to traffic by early 2010.

The direct east-west link to the Geraldton Port and alternative route for freight vehicles is scheduled for completion when port operations are predicted to reach peak activity.
The project will improve the access, safety and efficiency of the road transport industry in Geraldton at a time when it will be most needed.

A Construction Reference Group (CRG) have met four times, in September 2008, January 2009, March 2009 and June 2009 with further meetings as the works progress. The aim of the CRG is to provide input into aspects of the detailed design and construction of the project.
Community consultation with directly affected residents and the wider community commenced in February 2008 and will be ongoing during construction.
