Current Status

Development of three Concept Design Options is nearing completion for this project. Each of these options provides a differing level of access through this section of highway during times of significant flood. A number of detailed waterway assessments have been completed and continue to progress for this project. An environmental assessment and formal referral to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) is in progress. Consultation with Traditional Owners and the wider community has commenced.

Schedule of Works

Funding has been allocated by the Federal Government for pre construction activities associated with this project. These activities are planned for completion in 2010, and include:

  • Project planning;
  • Concept option development;
  • Environmental clearances;
  • Aboriginal heritage clearances;
  • Community and Stakeholder engagement; and
  • Other pre construction activities.

To date, no construction funding has been identified for this project. As a result there is currently no construction timing proposed.

About the Project

The Fitzroy Crossing to Gogo section project includes upgrading and widening approximately 11.4 km of the Great Northern Highway in the Kimberley Region, including widening or replacement of two single lane bridges at 2 Mile Creek and Blue Bush Creek and construction of up to two new bridges. A number of major floodways and drainage improvements are also proposed.

How will it benefit the community?

Once construction funding has been provided, delivery of this project will:

  • Provide improved access during the wet season across the Fitzroy River floodplain between Fitzroy Crossing townsite and the Bayulu Aboriginal Community to the east.
  • Improve traffic safety, pavement strength, seal width, wet season serviceability (access), reduce maintenance and freight costs and improve access throughout the Kimberley.
  • Ensure freight access on this link of the National Highway, for all vehicles including heavy transport operators.
  • Improve access for several local Indigenous communities to schools, food and other supplies and medical care during times of major flood.
  • Provide employment, training and development opportunities to local and Indigenous people during the delivery phase of the project.
