Future Tonkin Highway Extension to Mundijong Road

Tonkin Highway links the south-east corridor with the north-east and north-west corridors of the metropolitan areas.  The south-east corridor is a fast growing area and Byford, Armadale, Kelmscott ad Gosnells are faced with large volumes of heavy vehicles and other traffic, travelling to and from the South West region.  The Highway will service planned industrial and commercial developments in Forrestdale, as well as future urban developments in Byford and Mundijong.  It will also service the Kewdale industrial area and the Perth airport.

The Tonkin Highway Extension is being constructed in two stages, an inital stage of 18 kilometres from Mills Road West, Martin to Thomas Road, Byford and then a second stage of 14 kilometres to South Western Highway, Mundijong.  The section of the Tonkin Highway Extension from Forrest Road to Thomas Road was opened on 16 December 2005, completing the Stage 1 works.  There is no funding assigned to undertake the Stage 2 works at this time.

The extension of Tonkin Highway to South Western Highway via Mundijong Road involves the construction of a 14 kilometre four lane dual carriageway to South Western Highway.

The timing of the extension of Tonkin Highway to Mundijong will be dependant on future traffic growth in the south-east corridor, and in particular the rate of urban development in the Mundijong area.

Possible Interim Tonkin Highway Extension to South Western Highway south to Orton Road

While no funds are currently allocated in the 2006 Budget and Forward Estimates for the construction of the 14 kilometres extension of the Highway to Mundijong Road, the Minister for Planning and Infractructure has requested Main Roads and the Department for Planning and Infrastructure to progress the planning and development work of an interim extension of the Highway.

The proposed interim extension would extend Tonkin Highway from Thomas Road to Orton Road and develop a linkage across to South Western Highway via Orton Road south to bypass the Byford townsite and allow streetscape improvements to be undertaken along South Western Highway through the townsite.

These planning works are underway and the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale, local stakeholders and the community in the Byford area will all be fully consulted about the proposed project by the relevent agencies.

Details relating to the project are yet to be finalised but the proposed extension would involve extending Tonkin Highway approximately 3.5 kilometres and constructing a new road some 3 Kilometres in length just south of Orton Road to connect onto South Western Highway.

Due to the amount of planning, design and statutory clearances required, the project cannot be constructed in the immediate future and it will likely take up to 2 years for these planning and development activities to be completed.

Funding for construction will be sought in line with the proposed construction timing which will be determined by the completion of all necessary planning and development activities.
