Current Status

Forrest Highway and the extension of Kwinana Freeway were officially opened Sunday, 20 September 2009.

In officially opening the State’s biggest ever road infrastructure project, the Premier, Colin Barnett, and Transport Minister Simon O’Brien said the highway would significantly redefine Bunbury and the South West’s role in the future development of WA.

For the official statement please visit the State Government's Media Release website.

Travel to the South West

South West travellers will be able to use the new Kwinana Freeway extension and Forrest Highway this long weekend. The freeway extension and highway is expected to reduce the travel time from Perth to Bunbury by 30 minutes.

Roadworks

Though there are currently no roadworks on the Kwinana Freeway or Forrest Highway, there are works underway which may affect your entry/exit to these areas.

These include:

Treasure Road to Binningup Road - Northbound
14 September for 9 week period

Widening and reconstruction of Old Coast Road has commenced.

Contra-flow will be implemented with northbound traffic diverted onto the southbound carriageway into a single lane and southbound traffic reduced to one lane. Traffic management will be in place during the works to enhance safety for motorists and road workers. Speed limit reductions will be in place for the duration of the works.

Load Limits

Operators of oversize vehicles (>4m) must contact the site at least 24 hours prior to their proposed movement, so that their vehicle can be accommodated.

Mandurah Estuary Bridge
Middle traffic lane (normally westbound)
28 September
7.00 am to 9.00 pm

Mandurah Estuary Bridge will operate in contra-flow for east bound traffic, for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

Speed limit restrictions will be in place for the duration of the above period.

About the Project

The New Perth Bunbury Highway (NPBH) is a large scale infrastructure project, involving design and construction of 70.5 km of dual carriageway.

The Highway is under construction as a single project and will extend the dual carriageway from Kwinana Freeway at Safety Bay Road in Baldivis, around the eastern side of the Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary to join the existing dial carriageway on Old Coast Road at Lake Clifton.

The Highway will be constructed to freeway standard from Safety Bay Road to South Yunderup a distance of some 32 km. The remainder o the route, 38 km, will initially be built as a rural highway, with the ability to upgrade it in the future as traffic demands increase.

Funded by both the Commonwealth and State Government of WA, the project will double the length of the existing freeway network and provide a high standard inter-regional road link that will improve transport connectivity and road safety.

The Project includes:

  • 6 interchanges
  • 10 intersections
  • 19 bridges
  • 32 km of principal shared path for pedestrians and cyclists
  • 7 pedestrian and cyclist underpasses
  • 14 fauna underpasses

As the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken by Main Roads, the Highway is expected to greatly benefit West Australians by enhancing efficiency and accessibility of the State's road network.

The project is being delivered by the Southern Gateway Alliance, which includes Main Roads and three of the industry's leading companies - Leighton Contractors, WA Limestone and GHD.

Community Involvement

To encourage community involvement in the project, the Alliance has used a range of engagement methods including:

  • Technical Working Groups
  • Dialogue with the Community Workshops
  • Neighbourhood meetings
  • Stakeholder meetings on special interest issues
  • Information sessions and presentations

These activities have enabled matters regarding the design concept and scope of works such as design requirements, environmental commitments and construction to be deliberated with the community and key stakeholders.

Members of the public who would like to receive updates about the project are invited to register at the Southern Gateway Alliance website at http://www.sgalliance.com.au/community_database.html.

Members of the public are also welcome to submit any comments or questions about the Highway to the project team for consideration at enquiries@sga.incite.com.au.
