This section of highway is located in the Shire of Mundaring and forms part of the National Highway network. The work has been undertaken to improve the existing road’s condition to enable it to manage increasing transport and traffic demands for both tourists and commuters.
The Project has been funded by the Federal Government under its National Highway program.
The upgraded section includes expansion to a 4 lane dual carriageway:
- between Sawyers Valley to Old Northam Road on an improved alignment; and
- between Old Northam Road and one kilometres east of The Lakes Turn Off with the highway mostly following the current alignment.
Better access and turning facilities have been provided at:
- Old Sawyers Road (left in and left out only);
- Malabar Road;
- East of Cairn Street reserve (a u-turn facility);
- Lion Street;
- Bambrook Road (includes a service road to Stonehouse);
- Fagan Street (existing connections to be changed);
- Chidlow Road (including access to the Gun Club);
- Old Northam Road;
- Gorrie Road;
- Flynn Road;
- The Lakes Turn Off Roadhouse;
- Lakes Turn Off to be realigned just north of the Lakes Roadhouse;
- Ash Road; and
- Repositioned and extended "Harry Weekes" truck bay west of The Lakes Turn Off.
To ensure maximum safety and efficiency, local side road connections have been modified as follows:
- Old Sawyers Road (right turns are not permitted into or out of this street);
- Lion Street (realigned intersection provided);
- Whim Close (the previous gravel service road connection to the highway has been closed and a new connection at Lion Street has been provided);
- Fagan Street (the previous connections to the highway have been closed and a new connection has been provided onto the highway);
- Chidlow Road/Gun Club access (the previous access to the Gun Club has been closed and access is now provided from the new Chidlow Road); and
- Flynn Road (realigned intersection provided).
