Bullsbrook to Bindoon Planning Study

We are undertaking a planning study to define the alignment for the future Perth-Darwin National Highway(PDNH) between Bullsbrook and Bindoon. The national highway currently follows the Great Northern Highway (GNH) alignment. The study addresses the long term needs for the highway with a 20 to 30 year planning horizon, and is divided into two sections:

  • the northern section between Brand Highway, Muchea and Calingiri Road, north of Bindoon
  • the southern section between Maralla Road Bullsbrook and Brand Highway, Muchea.

Northern Section

We have progressed the planning study to define the reservation and land requirements for the future deviation of the Perth Darwin National Highway (Great Northern Highway) east of the Bindoon townsite. The planning is required to protect a highway reservation for construction some time in the future and provide more certainty to landowners. This has been undertaken in consultation with directly affected landowners and other key stakeholders, including the Shire of Chittering. There is no funding committed to construct the proposed highway deviation.

Community consultation on a preferred concept and reservation for the proposed Bindoon deviation was conducted during July and August 2010. We have met with the majority of landowners along the proposed route, as well as the Shire of Chittering councillors and staff, to inform them of the highway deviation proposal and to discuss and clarify any issues.

The feedback was collated into a consultation report and reviewed to determine a final alignment.

The April Project Newsletter (2 page PDF 193 KB) provides further information on the outcomes of consultation and the final alignment.

The Shire of Chittering and the PDNH Steering Committee have endorsed the preferred concept and reservation as presented to the community in the previous brochure. The outcomes were subsequently endorsed by the Western Australian Planning Commission’s (WAPC) Sustainable Transport Committee.

What are the next steps in this planning study process?

The next step involves initiating an amendment to the Shire of Chittering’s Town Planning Scheme to include the PDNH reservation. Opportunity for further public comment is provided during this process.

At this stage, no decision has been made to construct this section of the PDNH. Consequently, landowners can continue to use their land for existing purposes.

Background

The Great Northern Highway (GNH) upgrade option was endorsed by the Shire of Chittering, Shire of Gingin, PDNH Steering Committee and WA Planning Commission's Infrastructure Coordinating Committee (WAPC/ICC) as the preferred long term alignment for Perth Darwin National Highway in October 2009.

A more detailed planning study has been underway since that time along the existing Great Northern Highway alignment, including the deviation east of the Bindoon townsite, to define a future road reservation for the highway between Muchea and Bindoon.

A preliminary concept and reservation plan for the existing GNH alignment between Muchea and Bindoon was out for comment until 10 December 2010. Comment was sought from landowners, the community and other stakeholders, and this is being assessed by Main Roads.

The November 2010 Project Newsletter (2 page PDF 413 KB) provides further information on the preliminary concept.

The July 2010 Project Newsletter (2 page PDF 232 KB) provides further background on the work undertaken to select a preferred alignment for the Highway between Muchea and Bindoon, including an eastern deviation around the Bindoon townsite.
