Current Status

Works are underway to meet our commitment to complete the balance of works remaining in Stage 1, which compliment the works delivered as Stage 1A with a dual carriageway from Broadhurst Road to Balmoral Road West at the Karratha town site.

The Stage 1B work package is the second and final component for Stage 1 of the Dampier Highway upgrade and are planned to commence in July 2009 with completion expected by December 2009.

Works will include the construction of two new traffic lanes on the southern side of the existing road which will extend the duplication from Broadhurst Road Roundabout through to Balmoral West Road Roundabout, carrying westbound traffic.

The existing road will become the eastbound two lane carriageway for the duplicated highway section.  For this to occur, the existing road will undergo some reconstruction and rehabilitation work to modify its existing two-way cross-fall to a one-way cross-fall across both lanes.

This will significantly improve side road access and general safety for road users on Dampier Highway.  Full movement intersections at Higham Road, the Hospital Access Road, Rosemary Road and Baynton Drive will be constructed.  This work will provide relief for one of the busiest parts of the highway in Karratha.

 The following improvements will also be included in the Highway upgrade:

  • Extension of the existing underpasses close to Rosemary Road intersection and Baynton Drive intersection;
  • Modification of existing full movement intersection at Burges Road to left in and left out only;
  • Reconstruction and extension of existing culverts;
  • Provision of 2 m sealed shoulders on each carriageway; and
  • Installation of median lighting.

The project was subject to an extensive community consultation program during September-October 2005.  Community feedback has been incorporated in the final road configuration which is to be constructed.
