The Pilbara Region covers a vast area and is in the middle of a major resources boom that has significant implications for the road network. Economic activity and population growth has been stimulated by the boom and the demands on the network are increasing at an unprecedented rate. The relative youth of the resource industry in the Region has seen considerable development of the road network in recent decades. However significant sections of the road network are now sufficiently old that there is the need for continuing maintenance and rehabilitation.
