Community feedback is being sought on the planning of a transport route for the future Geraldton North South Highway (GNSH).

Background

We are currently managing a planning study to define a reservation for the Highway, which will provide an alternative future north south regional road route for the Geraldton city area.

The Geraldton Region Plan identifies the location of future major roads in Geraldton, including the proposed Highway, as shown in the Locality Plan (1 page PDF 71 KB). The Department of Planning is currently undertaking a study to develop a structure plan for the expansion of the Narrigulu Industrial Area, which is being taken into account as part of the planning. The structure plan was the subject of recent community consultation.

The southern section of the route between Brand Highway and Geraldton Southern Transport Corridor (GSTC - currently under construction) is strategically more important than the northern section because it will provide a high standard link to the Geraldton Port, Narrigulu Industrial Area and the proposed outer Narrigulu-Oakajee Infrastructure Corridor.

A Working Group has been established to oversee this study and includes representatives from the City of Geraldton-Greenough, Department of Planning, Department for Environment and Conservation and the Mid West Development Commission.

Purpose of the Study

This planning will allow a road reservation to be defined and protected for the construction of the Highway at some time in the future. There is no funding at this stage to build the road. Funding can only be considered after the reservation has been defined and planning finalised.

By completing the following planning process:

Alignment Selection Study (complete) -> Alignment Definition Study (this study) -> Protection of Road Reservation (next stage)

as outlined in Project Overview sheet (6 page PDF 1.2 MB), we can provide certainty for landowners and a framework for land use planning and development.

How can I be involved?

Active community involvement is vital to the study and the community is encouraged to participate, by identifying issues or concerns and providing feedback on the preliminary concept plan.

Feedback can be provided to the Study Team by forwarding the Comment Sheet (1 page PDF 49 KB) to:

GNSH Planning Study
Carolyn Walker Public Relations
PO Box 178

Or fax to 9450 1261
Or email to icwalker@vianet.net.au

by the 20 November 2009.

A report will be prepared summarising community feedback and comments on the preliminary GNSH concept plan presented.

Issues raised will be further examined and discussed with the Working Group to finalise a preferred concept and reservation plan for endorsement by the City of Geraldton-Greenough and the WAPC/STC. Action will then start with the City to include the road reservation in the local statutory planning scheme.
