Updated March 2012
Onslow Road Upgrade Project
Project Overview
The State Government has approved the development of the the Ashburton North Strategic Industrial Area (ANSIA), situated 11 km south west of Onslow. The State has also approved the Chevron proposal to develop the
Wheatstone LNG field with onshore processing to take place within the ANSIA, along with onshore processing of the Macedon LNG field by BHP Billiton.
Onslow Road provides the only sealed link between Onslow and the North West Coastal Highway. The road was constructed in the 1980’s to service the Onslow community and is only sealed 6.2 m wide with 0.5 m unsealed shoulders. Considerable work is required to widen and upgrade this road to accommodate the expected increase in traffic, including a substantial increase in road train movements associated with the developments.

Scope of Works
While ultimately Main Roads WA wishes to widen the road to 9m inclusive of 2 x 1m sealed shoulders, this work has been postponed until construction of the Chevron & BHP Billiton gas facilities has been completed.
In the interim, prior to the construction phase of the ANSIA, to improve safety for both construction traffic and the general public, Main Roads WA will be undertaking the following works;
-
Rehabilitating and sealing shoulders from the North West Coastal Highway to Beacon Creek Road / Second Avenue in Onslow.
-
Construction of four overtaking lanes, including overlay of the existing pavement.
-
Providing centre and edge lining over the full length of the road.
-
Upgrade of intersections at North West Coastal Highway and Beadon Creek Road / Second Avenue to cope with the increased traffic volumes.
A map of works (1 page PDF 79 KB) is provided for your information.
Construction Schedule
Works commenced in late October 2011 with the first 40 km of road rehabilitation complete. It is anticipated that the project will be completed in April 2012.

Traffic management plans will be put in place for all works to ensure reasonable traffic flow at all times. All road users are advised that during certain times of the day Onslow Road will be reduced to a single lane with speed limit reductions. All road users should expect delays. More details on the timing and impacts will be outlined in our Regional Works & Events page and daily Radio updates.
