Sealing of Shoulders - Barradale to Pannawonica Road

Background

North West Coastal Highway is the coastal link between the south of the State and the regional centres of Karratha and Port Hedland.

As well as being a principal freight route with triple road trains (up to 53.5 m) operating north of Carnarvon, the road also provides access to various tourist destinations, mining operations and pastoral communities.

The road is sealed 7.4 m wide however the shoulders are unsealed, which can result in excessive wear of the natural gravels and result in sever edge drop off increasing the risk of loss of control of vehicles – a significant risk for those towing caravans and boats.

The project will provide additional sealed width, reducing edge wear and drop off, in addition the sealed shoulders will enable the installation of audible edge lines.

How will the construction works affect the community?

Traffic management plans will be put in place for all works to ensure reasonable traffic flow at all times.  All road users are advised that during certain times of the day the North West Coastal Highway will be reduced to a single lane with speed limit reductions.  All road users should expect delays.

More details on the timing and impacts will be outlined in our Road Condition Reports and daily Radio updates.
